CHARTER SCHOOL FUNDING NEWS

Senate Accepts $100 Million in Charter Cuts.
We need your help.

Please read the press release (below) that was issued on July 15 by The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools.

The Senate is back in session this week and has an enormous amount of work to accomplish before its next recess.  Earlier today, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) spoke on the Senate floor and said the supplemental bill that passed the House with its $800 million in education reform cuts will be debated next week.  THE REALLY BAD NEWS is that the SENATE IS STILL ACCEPTING the $100 million cut to the charter programs!

We have learned the Majority Leader is willing to accept cutting charter and Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) funding and will "work" to restore the Race to the Top Funding.  THIS CAN'T BE ACCEPTED.  Charter supporters and education supporters must send a message today to the Senate. Let Senators know this type of BACK ROOM WASHINGTON DEAL-MAKING at the expense of our children's future won't be accepted.

If the cuts to the charter program in the House-passed supplemental were enacted:
* 6,000 charter employees could be in jeopardy of either losing their jobs, or never even be hired to work in a charter school to begin with -  and
* Countless communities across the country could be forced to "back step" on education reform.

The time to act is NOW. We need you to do three things immediately to help save the education reform funding!
      1. Call your Senators and follow the instructions to voice your opposition to cutting charter funding! To do this, first text the word C-H-A-R-T-E-R to 30644 and follow the instructions to be automatically connected to your Senator. If you don't use text messaging, call (202) 224-3121 to be connected.
      2. Take Action online using our online form. Even if you've already taken action on this, please do so again!
      3. Forward this message to your networks, and tell your friends to call their Senators and take action online.

We have made a significant impact on this debate, standing strong in support of education reform, charter schools, and improving our nation's education system.  Don't let the work we have already done be defeated!  Take action and help us ensure the Senate does not accept the $800 million cuts to education reform funding in the war supplemental, including $100 million in cuts to the Charter Schools Program funding.

Thank you for all your help,

R. Brooks Garber
Vice President for Federal Advocacy

Sign Up to Be a Mentor Family

A mentor family is a great way for a family to still be involved in the Intern Program. They invite the intern over for dinner, provide occasional rides, and involve the intern in some family activities (sports, visiting local attractions, traveling, even going to Grandma's house). Some interns might also be available to help Mentor Family children with homework. It's great for the family to experience the French culture, and the intern benefits from seeing another family's take on American culture. Call Diane at the Kindergarten campus at 816-333-0936 if you are interested!
