Wow—got a lot done Saturday. Had a ton of help, including four teachers. Put in 2” of gravel in the sidewalk form, watered the trees (Tim, I hope you find a key to the janitor closet!), finished up the classrooms in the annex (though they may need touching up), finished “Seapearling” the entrance to the addition, got at least one coat—in some places more than one coat—on the halls in the addition, and picked up trash. Everyone was focused on the hall, so didn’t get the lab room painted. (Ed. That’s ok, maybe this Saturday! And Tim *did* find the key to the closet. :))

And on the Cherry Street Playground, we had a group of volunteers who showed up last Wednesday to unload a truck of playground materials. The were donated from TAMKO, a Joplin company, and will be used for Phase 1 of the playground. Thanks so much to all Cherry Street volunteers!

Our volunteer days have been well-attended! Thank you to the many community members who have been able to attend a volunteer shift (or more than one) and do your part to pitch in at Cherry Street.

Books for the library – in French and English, appropriate for ages 5-8.

600 moving boxes for teachers to move supplies to new classrooms

Commercial grade refrigerator

Appliances for teaching kitchen (residential grade): stove, 30 inch wide gas or dual fuel range, refrigerator, dishwasher

To Promote Health & Fitness:

Sports Equipment for Gym: balls (all types), jump ropes, mats, climbing wall, cones, stopwatches, badminton nets and rackets, mesh bags for balls, storage tubs, carts, shelves
Playground: soccer goals, basketball goals with rebound board, commercial grade swing sets, wood chips, industrial paint for concrete, riding toys (scooters, balance bikes, and tricycles), locked storage area

We Closed the Deal at Cherry Street!!!

We had a wonderful turnout last week at Cherry Street. Over 100 community members showed up to celebrate the closing of the deal…making it official that the Cherry Street building is now ours!

Thursday Mornings are Happening at Cherry!

The Thursday morning painting sessions are going very well. Parents who have flexible schedules have come to splash many coats of fresh paint on the walls. There are still more paint brushes to put to work so if you have the ability to come on Thursday mornings anytime from 9am till noon, we’d love to have you join us. Childcare is provided for any little ones that you may need to have looked after while you help beautify the Cherry Street campus. If you are bringing kids with you, please bring some snacks and water cups for them while you are painting in the classrooms. We hope to see more shining faces there each week!

Volunteer effort is going strong at Cherry Street

At a recent Volunteer Day: Music could be heard throughout the north wing of classrooms as volunteers hit the power button on the boomboxes they brought just before spreading paint on the walls. The 2nd floor classrooms are down to touch-up and some oil-based painting (cabinets) as a result of the collaborative effort.

A volunteer parent was slotted for cleanup of the first floor rooms nearly the entire time. Several pitched in at the end of the day to organize materials to prepare for the next group. About a dozen kids played in the gym as 2-3 supervisors watched over them. Come on over and leave your mark!

Cherry Street Update - February 24 - We Need Help!

Thank you so much to the volunteers who have shown up at Cherry Street in the past month. We appreciate your time and generosity.

However, we need more parents to sign up to help!

Every dollar that we’re forced to spend on paid labor for renovations/painting is one dollar less that we can put into things like murals and dry erase boards. And those are the features that our kids are going to think are really cool, and our teachers are going to appreciate and use.
So, we’re expanding our workday opportunities. We’re going to provide the gym as a babysitting area, and we’ll even have a few babysitters. We’re adding days during the week, and we encourage YOU to gather your own crew for your own community day that works for you. Call or email Tim Ahlenius to arrange the day/time.

In the meantime, we are issuing a challenge to all grade levels to bring the parents in your class together in the spirit of community and service. We’ve assigned groups of grades to a few dates each. If they don’t work for you, you’re welcome to ANY workday that does.

First Round of Grade Level Volunteer Dates/Times:

Kindergarten, 4th grade
Saturday, March 3, 10-2 and Thursday, March 8, 6-8pm

1st and 5th grades
Sunday, March 11, noon-4 and Tuesday, March 13, 6-8pm

2nd and 6th grades
Thursday, March 22, 6-8pm (and one additional day TBD)

3rd, 7th and 8th grades
Saturday, April 7, 10-2 and Tuesday, April 10, 6-8pm

Cherry Street Work Days to Continue Regularly

Bonjour! If you haven’t had a chance to participate in a work day at Cherry Street, never fear…the scheduled work days are numerous and plentiful.

We have scheduled work days most every Saturday until the work is finished. We would like our wonderful volunteers to RSVP so we can be sure to have enough tools and equipment to go around each day.

Also, if Saturdays don’t work for you, but you’d still like to volunteer, please call Tim Ahlenius at 816-516-2165, or email Tim at: tdahlenius@everestkc.net.

Tim will work with you to get another day and time that WILL work for your schedule.

Post Work Weekend Update

For the past few weeks we’ve had a paint crew at Cherry Street spraying the ceilings in all the classrooms and the cafeteria with a fresh coat of paint. The results are terrific!

Saturday, Jan 21st we had another great work day at the Cherry Street Campus. About 15-20 individuals showed up ready and willing to get some tasks done. Our main area of focus was the 2nd floor classrooms.

We spent a great deal of time on the woodwork and cabinetry, getting those areas ready for painting. We also had a couple folks pull the tile out of the infirmary and admin office so those areas can be prepped for new flooring.

Next on the list is to get the 1st floor classrooms prepped for painting. It is our hope to have another work day on Sat. Feb 4th to accomplish that goal. Then we are planning to get the woodwork painted and some color on the walls.

We have a team at Cherry Street now, preparing the walls for paint (repairing plaster cracks, skim coating drywall walls, etc). We also hope to have the other areas of flooring removed that are scheduled to be replaced.

We’ve also discussed opening up the school at other hours for volunteers to come in to work (daytimes, evenings, Sundays, etc). If there are particular times during your week that you feel you might be able to put a little time in, please let us know. We will do all that we can to facilitate that for you.
